Broken link in a scientific publication

As part of my homework, I need to read certain publications and apply their methods, algorithms, etc. These publications provide URLs where I can find more details about certain concepts and source code. Especially in old publications this link is broken, making it hard for me to complete my homework. How could I have access to this essential information?

Contact author(s)

All the publications provide the authors' affiliations and contact details (email). I sent an email to the author, requesting access to the information, but it turned out he has changed affiliation and the email address is no longer valid. Then, I had to search for the author's current and valid email address on a search engine. I sent him an email, requesting the information, and he replied after some time with a link to the information I needed.
