Accessing a region-restricted webpage

Even when using the world wide web, we encounter problems to access URLs due to geographical location. More precisely, the problem I faced was with a spanish tv channel website. Contents (series, movies, progrms…) were not accessible from Austria due to the geographical blocking of the webpage.

Using VPN can maybe prohibited in certain countries. There are also free VPN solutions. Althrough they are slow, they allow access restricted information. Examples could be VPN Gate or HideMyAss.

That's nice two points!

Re "free VPN": VPN Gate is indeed a very useful project, achieving sometimes also rather high speeds (e.g. over 30 Mbps). The list with linked public VPN relay servers allows to filter what to look for etc.

Using VPNs
Although it is not a free (economically speaking) solution, VPNs will allow to tunnel the traffic through an encrypted connection and make the content available on the other side.
The main disadvantage of VPNs is they do not have a user interface. They need to be hardcoded into the operating system, and implementaation can sometimes be difficult for users.

yes, there are indeed solutions with straightforward GUI for different VPN (types). Just google/search for GUI for a particular VPN (type) of choice (e.g. SoftEther VPN (SSL-VPN), L2TP/IPsec, OpenVPN, MS-SSTP).

There is a proxy based on VPN (Virtual Private Network). It will allow us to see multimedia content, since it is not a browser application or a website, but completely alters our public IP address, making the websites that receive our requests believe that we are in another geographical location.
The name of this proxy is porXPN. It has a free version but also a premium version.

Taggings:

Free VPNs almost always sell your information to third parties. Therefore one should be cautious using them and not log into online banking web sites and other websites with critical information.

It might be possible 1) to also make use of a proxy server, configuring it appropriately in your operating system or in your browser. There are also some free public proxy servers, which are rather slow. Another potential solution is 2) to use one of the so-called DNS redirectors. Be also aware of possible resulting breaches of the respective law :)
