Solution how tu secure your wireless network

  • There are few steps that should be taken in order to protect your wireless network:
  1. Change wireless router password
  • Every router has an administrator password that is used to log into the device and modify configuration parametres. Most devices have weak default passwords (e.g. "password", manufacturer's name) that can be easily guessed. In order to avoid this situation, default password should be changed to something else.

2.   Enable WPA encryption

  • WEP (Wired Equivalency Privacy) encryption has it weaknesses and user can crack the encryption and access the wireless network. To avoid this problem, WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) encryption should be used or even more recent version WPA2 that provides stronger encryption. If the wireless device doesn't support this kind of encryption, it is better to use any kind of encryption than none.

3.  Don't broadcast SSID

  • Most WLAN routers broadcast the network's name - SSID (Service Set IDentifier). This makes wireless network visible to any wireless systems within range of it and by turning of SSID broadcast, network will become invisible to others.

4.  Use MAC filtering

  • Turning on MAC filtering, it is possible to limit network access only to those devices the user has defined. For this purpose, user has to know 12-character MAC address of every device he wants to allow to connect the network.

5.  Disable remote administration

  • Most WLAN routers can be remotely administrated via the Internet. It can cause a problem that anyone from the Internet can find and access router. To avoid this to happen, remote administration should be turned off.

The necessary hardware is widely availabe and relatively easy to install and configure. With wireless network users can connect to Internet from every part of the house without any cable necessary which makes thier life much easier. This technology brings meny benefits but it has to be properly secured to prevent many serious risks and dangers if left wide open.</span></span></span></p><p><span style="font-family: &quot;Cambria&quot;,&quot;serif&quot;; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: #000000;">In best case, intruder only uses the victim's broadband connection to surf the web and download content. It can slow down Internet or network access for the victim and couse additional cost it the ISP meters used bandwith and charges for actual usage.</span></span></span></p><p><span style="font-family: &quot;Cambria&quot;,&quot;serif&quot;; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: #000000;">An unauthorized user could abuse the connection for hacking, launching DoS attack or distributing illegal material.</span></span></span></p><p><span style="font-family: &quot;Cambria&quot;,&quot;serif&quot;; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: #000000;">Through wireless network, intruder can access victim's private network. He can access confidential data such as financial data, tax records, development information&hellip; By employing a sniffer an intruder can even sniff email of FTP user names and passwords and use information to gain unauthorized access to email accounts or web services without the victim's knowledge. </span></span></span></p><p><span style="font-family: &quot;Cambria&quot;,&quot;serif&quot;; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: #000000;">What is also important, one does not have to be a programmer or network specialist to discover and gain unauthorized access to wireless network. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">&nbsp;</span></span></span></span></p><p><span style="font-family: &quot;Cambria&quot;,&quot;serif&quot;; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: #000000;">Considering all of the possible attacks, it's clearly that every wireless network has to be secured in order to avoid problems. </span></span></span></p>
